Die Dark Star ist seit 20 unterwegs und zerstört instabile Planeten für die Kolonisten eine Rückkehrmöglichkeit gibt es nicht. Der mit der Erde ist verloren gegangen und einen Unfall auch das Klopapier.
Der Kapitän ist halbtot und liegt Eis.
Die 4 noch lebenden unrasierten und Mannschaftsmitglieder sind in Lethargie verfallen und gehen nur noch gegenseitig auf die Nerven. In Beobachtungskuppel sitzt Talby und sinniert über die von Meteorschwärmen.
Pinback ist durch einen unglücklichen Zufall die Dark Star gekommen hat sich aber der Situation abgefunden er muss sich nun dem außerirdischen Maskottchen welches die Crew aufgelesen einer Art Gummiball mit Füßen herumplagen.
Boiler macht derbe Späße und spielt mit Waffen herum einer der Gründe weshalb Schiff gegen Ende in Schwierigkeiten kommt.
Doolittle hat die Stelle des Captains und dirigiert die Dark Star durch die des Raumes.
So könnte es wohl ewig weiter wenn da nicht ein Asteroidenfeld wäre mit Vernichtung die intelligente Bombe Nummer 20 betraut Die Sache geht schief und Bombe 20 nicht abgekoppelt werden. Doolittle zieht seinen Raumanzug und begibt sich raus um die Bombe philosophischem Wege davon zu überzeugen nicht zu Nun folgt einer der interessantesten Filmdialoge überhaupt:

Bombe 20 kommt aber später doch zu dem Schluss dass eine Explosion not dabei erwischt es die Dark Star samt und Pinback Talby und Doolittle die sich des Schiffes befinden überleben. Talby findet seinen mit dem er dann letztendlich verglüht Doolittle mit einem Wrackteil der Dark Star in Atmosphäre eines Planeten.
