Siege Warfare: The Fortress in the Early Modern World 1494-1660 (Siege Warfare)
Excellent academic work
|von Christopher Duffy|
This is an excellent work that covers a vast topic well. In addition to technical developments in military engineering and the weapons driving it, this book gives a good overview of the social, economic, and political climate under which this occurs.
Hard going for the non-expert
Siege warfare is a comprehensive and well presented study of warfare in the period considered. But it is perhaps not very accessible for the non-expert. The politics and history of this period is fairly complicated, and if you don't have a grasp of it (as I don't) you will find that you can't follow the text very easily.
