Squeezy seems to have vanished, actually. Haven't seen trace of him for almost two weeks.

---------------

After the death of his companion Byrne, Barber is forced to live in isolation ('solitary' is an adjective). The fact that his supplies tend to run out makes him worry. Barber knows that the hard circumstances might lead to his immediate death, too. Suddenly, however, he discovers a cave in which he finds a recently murdered man. Barber buries the man, and, as he notices that his precursor appears to look like him, he decides to adopt his identity. The cave now becomes Barber’s home. Luckily for Barber, the cave offers him so many food supplies that he is able to easily survive during the following months.
Barber’s new life as a hermit has ups and downs. At first, Barber is able to enjoy all of the benefits of being a painter (wie er Maler wurde ist unklar...). Nobody criticises Barber’s work, which makes him feel happy.
Soon, however, Barber has to cope with the effects of loneliness, such as having hallucinations.
When Barber’s materials and food supplies run out, he is forced to stick to a strict daily routine.
For instance, he keeps a daily inventory of his supplies and journals of his thoughts. Although he finds it hard to cope with the discipline, he later considers his strong attitude as a personal triumph.
In March, George "Ugly Mouth" arrives. He is the first person to visit Barber since he moved into the cave.
They develop a good companionship with each other. What George does not notice is that Barber is not his friend, “Tom,” whom he had originally come to see. Barber learns about the Gresham brothers from George, who are a gang with whom Tom had been involved in criminal activities. For the next period of time, Barber is aware that the Gresham brothers might return. Consequently, he has to stay watchful and prepare for the worst. Finally, the Greshams arrive and Barber valorously kills his enemies in a battle.
Barber finds stolen money and jewelry in the amount of $30,000 in he Greshams' saddlebags. He rides off with these newly-found riches to start a new life.

palazzo di luna

You should elaborate a bit on the significance of painting in particular, given the freedom/imprisonment of solitude; and since Paul Auster works a lot with metaphors in this writing doing so seems appropriate.
