"Brimstone wedding" at FAL! International meeting discusses the future of agricultural sulphur research from O07.10.2005 - (idw) Bundesforschungsanstalt für Landwirtschaft (FAL)
Sulphur research became "clubbable" in 1997, at least in the science community. 13 meetings after its establishment in 1997, the members of COST Action 829 "Fundamental, Agronomical and Environmental Aspects of Sulfur Nutrition and Assimilation in Plants" meet for the proverbial "brimstone wedding" and again at FAL in Braunschweig, Germany. 25 years after the first symptoms of sulphur deficiency (photo) were detected in field grown oilseed rape by scientists currently working at the Institute of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science of the Federal Agricultural Research Center (FAL) in Braunschweig, Germany, the work of the group significantly contributed to the fact that sulphur fertilization is today an accepted standard in quality focused and environmental friendly plant production. Task of the "brimstone wedding" at FAL is to identify gaps in the knowledge of factors and processes involved in the sulphur metabolism and to evaluate their significance for applied science. Special attention will be paid to cross-talks between the metabolic pathways of sulphur and other mineral plant nutrients. Scientists of ten nations have announced their participation in the event, which is jointly organised by FAL and the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) and sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Consumer Production, Nutrition and Agriculture (BMVEL).
