Microarray-Reader - A new Prototype by Fraunhofer IBMT forms the Basis for customer-specific Solutions

The Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT) has developed a new prototype of microarray reader that forms a cost-efficient basis for customer-specific solutions in the the area of DNA- and protein readers. High up-front costs for a state-of-the-art microarray scanner and the challenges of evaluation and handling microarray data are serious obstacles for a broader use of microarrays.
State-of-the-art microarray scanners are complex instruments which may cause significant maintenance costs.
The new reader prototype by Fraunhofer IBMT pursues a simplified design concept: A minimum number of components and moving parts help in minimising costs, yet offering sufficient performance for most microarray reading needs. Because of the flexible optical design and white light illumination up to four fluorophors can be imaged one by one. Customised solutions with improved optical resolution below 10 µm (e.g. for cell imaging) as well as wide-field optics (e.g. for the scanning of microtiter plates) are possible. The platform hence forms a cost-efficient bare-bone for customer-specific microarray readers.
