Nature film-maker Sir David Attenborough to receive Knowledge Award of Honour from Swedish National Encyclopedia21.08.2007 - (idw) Schwedischer Forschungsrat - The Swedish Research Council
More than half a billion people have seen his programs and films, which have touched and spread knowledge to generations of people around the world. On September 12 TV legend Sir David Attenborough will be in Stockholm to receive the first Knowledge Award of Honour from the hands of HRH Crown Princess Victoria. The grand Swedish Gala of Knowledge will take place at the same venue as the Nobel Banquet, in the Blue Hall at Stockholm City Hall.
The total value of the prize is SEK 1.5 million (roughly USD 220,000), and the other five laureates will be announced in the middle of September at a royal gala evening.

The Swedish National Encyclopaedia Knowledge Award is one of Sweden's biggest awards in stimulation of knowledge and curiosity. It is conferred by the Swedish National Encyclopedia. The Swedish Research Council is one of the co-operating organizations. The purpose is to spotlight and encourage individuals whose work serves to stimulate people's curiosity, love of knowledge, and ability to learn more. The prize was instituted in 2002 and is awarded annually.

The well-known jury that selects the laureates includes Carl-Henric Svanberg, President and CEO of Ericsson; Lena Teschow Torell, professor and CEO of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences; Harriet Wallberg Henriksson, professor and president of the Karolinska Institute; and Jan-Eric Sundgren, Senior Vice President of Volvo. The jury is chaired by Arne Ekman, editor in chief of the Swedish National Encyclopedia.
