Patient "Patients"

12.03.2008 - (idw) Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg

Heidelberg students of dentistry train at the most modern facilities in Europe / Dummies with Multi-Media equipment The patient does not mind, even if the drill has to be used several times - he is a dummy.

Dentistry students at the University of Heidelberg have access to the most modern training facilities in Europe, giving them optimal preparation for actual practice. Phantom heads with interchangeable sets of teeth simulate patients who patiently endure all the treatment attempts made by the future dentists.

A student practices on a dummy for some 700 hours before being allowed to treat his first real patient under supervision. "Our students systematically learn all the steps involved dental restoration and replacement," states Professor Dr. Peter Rammelsberg, Dean of the Department of Dentistry, Heidelberg University.

Equipped with PC, monitor, camera, and screen

The simulation facilities are not only fully equipped with all modern dental instruments - from drill to microscope to rinsing device and foot switch for adjusting the height and position of the "patient" - they also have multi-media equipment: PC, monitor, camera, and screen. The students can follow their progress in large format and access the learning programs and steps that have to be taken. The instructors can access every workstation, evaluate the progress, and give the students onscreen advice.

In 2007, a total of 84 simulation stations were installed in two halls at the Heidelberg University Hospital for Stomatology, Dentistry, and Orthodontics. The some 450 students at Heidelberg Dental Clinic study there in 4 simulation courses from the 4th to the 6th semester. The students also appreciate their "patient patients".
