On 1 October 2010, Dr. Dorothea Rüland will succeed Dr. Christian Bode as the DAAD's Secretary-General
Bonn, 23 March 2010. Dr. Dorothea Rüland, currently director of the Center for International Cooperation at Freie Universität Berlin, will assume her post as the new Secretary-General of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Bonn on 1 October 2010. DAAD Vice President Prof. Dr. Max Huber made the announcement after findings commission consultations in Berlin, which were attended by both DAAD board members and representatives of Germany's federal ministries for foreign affairs, education and research, and economic cooperation.
Dr. Rüland studied the subjects German, History, and Musicology at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and gained her doctorate in 1984. After five years work as a lektor (German Studies lecturer) in Thailand, she joined the DAAD and headed various work units at the headquarters and for a while the Jakarta branch office. From 2004 to when she joined Freie Universität Berlin in 2008, she was the Deputy Secretary-General. Ms Rüland is married to political scientist Professor Dr. Jürgen Rüland and has four children aged 16 to 23. She succeeds Dr. Christian Bode who, after 20 years as the DAAD's Secretary-General, will retire on 30 September 2010. "I am certain", says Vice President Huber, "this is a good decision for the DAAD's future and the internationality of German higher education institutions."
