The Northern Netherlands start cooperation with Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

23.08.2010 - (idw) ScanBalt

Over the last years a major health sector has developed in the former East German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. During the past three days mr. Max van den Berg, chairman of the Northern Netherlands Provinces and Queen's Commissioner of the Province of Groningen, visited this region, which is very similar to the Northern Netherlands. He was accompanied by the Chairman of the Board of the University of Groningen Sibrand Poppema and representatives of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), the Healthy Aging Network in the Northern Netherlands (HANNN), and the Triade company. The delegation was received in Schwerin by Prime Minister Erwin Sellering and Minister of Economy Jürgen Seidel. This was followed by talks that concerned among others the expansion of cooperation in the field of healthy aging and renewable energy, and the future cohesion policy of the European Union.

The Northern Netherlands are looking for active cooperation with North Germany in order to still be able to lay claims to funds from Brussels in the future. Prime Minister Sellering expressed his support for this cooperation and will put this issue on the agenda for next spring, when Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will chair a meeting with the Northern Netherlands, the Northern German states of Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony, and the cities of Bremen and Hamburg. At these consultations the three Queen's Commissioners of the Northern Netherlands will be present.

The visit to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was organized by Biocon Valley, a cooperation of government, universities and companies, that constitutes the German counterpart of the Healthy Aging Network in the Northern Netherlands. Biocon Valley is engaged in research on health in a broad sense, development of innovative biomedical materials, support of companies that introduce these inventions on the market, and in research into health food. In order to make the economy prosper as much as possible, its activities are extended also to other aspects of health, e.g.: the promotion of health tourism, the furtherance of spa facilities and the wellness business. Like Mecklenburg-Vorpommern UMCG participates in ScanBalt, a network of clusters in the life sciences around the Baltic Sea.

During the visit further cooperation between the two "healthy aging' networks was agreed on, especially in the field of experimental surgery, research that maps the health of large groups of people, the development of biomedical materials, and the so-called cold plasma technology, a revolutionary technique that may eventually lead to new treatment options for cancer. The Triade company, wich supports the set up of small businesses in the medical field, has agreed on active collaboration with Biocon Valley. A return visit from Biocon Valley to Groningen will take place in October, when HANNN organizes a conference on new technologies in the field of healthy aging.

Opportunities for cooperation were also explored in the field of renewable energy. In the originally strong agricultural Mecklenburg-Vorpommern a lot of power is produced from biomass. Currently the origin of half of all the power supply to private persons is wind energy and biomass. The state's ambition is to become in the future the major energy supplier for the more southern regions of Germany. At a power industry conference in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in November there will be discussed how this cooperation can take shape.
