Change in Leadership: Prof. Gert-Martin Greuel Appointed New Editor-in-Chief of Zentralblatt MATH02.01.2012 - (idw) Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe
As of 1 January 2012, ZBMATH will look to the future under new leadership
Karlsruhe, January 2012 Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Gert-Martin Greuel has been appointed the new editor-in-chief of the mathematics publication database "Zentralblatt für Mathematik," or ZBMATH for short. Greuel was appointed in a joint decision by the publishers of ZBMATH: FIZ Karlsruhe Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the European Mathematical Society, and the publishing house Springer Science+Business Media. Greuel will take the reins from Prof. Bernd Wegner, who successfully directed the renowned publication database for 37 years. Wegner, who was instrumental in both the digitization of the database and its development as an online service, will step down as editor-in-chief of ZBMATH, which is a unique source of information on publications in mathematical research and history, at the end of 2011.
His successor, Greuel, not only has many years of experience in academia and mathematical research. He also knows ZBMATH from the perspective of its users: As a professor at the University of Kaiserslautern and director of the Oberwolfach Mathematical Research Institute, he makes regular use of the database. "On account of his relationships with academics around the world, Prof. Greuel understands the needs of the academic community. He is thus the ideal person for ensuring the future management of the database based on the needs of its users," Prof. Marta Sanz-Solè, president of the European Mathematical Society, says.
First founded in 1931 as an abstracting and reviewing service in pure and applied mathematics, ZBMATH grew under the direction of Prof. Wegner and his editorial staff to become a key academic resource for mathematicians in Europe, and has played an important role in numerous digitization projects. Today, ZBMATH is excellently positioned, and holds the potential to be further developed in many highly interesting and innovative directions.
Prof. Greuel intends to make the most of this potential: "Today, ZBMATH is almost exclusively used online," Greuel says. "I therefore intend to further enhance the ZBMATH online service in order to better serve its users. In the future, we will concentrate on further developing author identification features, while also optimizing search and display functions. Topics that will play an increasingly important role in the future, such as semantics, visualization, and the ability to research mathematical software, will also represent a key area of my activities."
The publishers of ZBMATH are pleased that Prof. Greuel has accepted the position of editor-in-chief. "We're convinced that Gert-Martin Greuel is the optimal successor to Bernd Wegner, and we're looking forward to a successful collaboration," says Sabine Brünger-Weilandt, President and CEO of FIZ Karlsruhe.
As the world's most comprehensive database on publications in pure and applied mathematics, the "Zentralblatt für Mathematik" (ZBMATH) is an indispensable tool for academics and professional practitioners of mathematics. All past editions of the Jahrbuch für Mathematik ("Compendium of Mathematics"), which was published from 1868 to 1943, have been incorporated into the ZBMATH database, thus ensuring complete coverage of mathematical publications back to 1868, and in some cases even to 1826. ZBMATH currently contains some 3 million works cited, including journal articles, series, monographs, conference presentations, and other publications. Some 120,000 citations are added to the database each year. The database is published jointly by the European Mathematical Society (EMS), FIZ Karlsruhe, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and Springer Science+Business Media.
