IAMO young researcher nominated for participation at Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting07.05.2014 - (idw) Leibniz-Institut für Agrarentwicklung in Transformationsökonomien (IAMO)
IAMO researcher Florian Schierhorn will meet Nobel Laureates in Lindau
Young researcher Florian Schierhorn from the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) belongs to the selected top young researchers who are invited to take part at the 5th Lindau Meeting of the Winners of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences from 19 till 23 August in Lindau.
Since 1951 the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings are held once a year in remembrance of Alfred Nobel in Lindau on Lake Constance. For the fifth time there is a special meeting for economists. Unique in the world 480 excellent young researchers from more than 80 countries will this year meet 19 Nobel Laureates for cross-cultural and inter-generational exchange of knowledge and experiences. The 480 young researchers have been selected in a multi-stage and international selection process. Schierhorn, PhD student at the Department Structural Development of Farms and Rural Areas at IAMO, was successfully proposed for participation by his supervisors Prof. Dr. Alfons Balmann and Dr. Daniel Müller.
In his research Schierhorn is dealing with the question, how in view of a growing world population food production can be increased and at the same time negative impacts on the environment can be reduced to a minimum. He is especially interested in the potentials of successor states of the former Soviet Union where widespread abandoned agricultural land can be found. Together with researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin he developed a model which allows a better understanding of the spatial distribution of abandoned land and thereby of the agricultural potentials of this region. The model furthermore helps identify areas where recultivation is associated with lower carbon emission. The results of this study can be found in the article "Post-Soviet cropland abandonment and carbon sequestration in European Russia, Ukraine and Belarus", which was published in the renowned scientific journal Global Biogeochemical Cycles.

The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) analyses economic, social and political processes of change in the agricultural and food sector, and in rural areas. The geographic focus covers the enlarging EU, transitional regions in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe, as well as Central and Eastern Asia. IAMO is making a contribution towards enhancing understanding of institutional, structural and technological changes. Moreover, IAMO is studying the resulting impacts on the agricultural and food sector as well as the living conditions of rural populations. The outcomes of our work are used to derive and analyse strategies and options for enterprises, agricultural markets and politics. Since its foundation in 1994, IAMO has been part of the Leibniz Association, a German community of independent research institutes.
Please note that the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe was renamed Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies in January 2014. The acronym IAMO is still valid.
