New Urban and Landscape Studies Master's Degree Program at the University of Basel26.06.2014 - (idw) Universität Basel
The University of Basel is offering a new, interdisciplinary master studies program: Urban and Landscape Studies. This degree program will start in two years in cooperation with the African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. The University Council has approved three professorships for the program.
Plans are in place for the English-language Urban and Landscape Studies degree program to begin in the fall semester of 2016. The degree will be devoted to examining current questions surrounding social, urban planning and territorial development on a global level, specifically from the perspectives of the fine arts, social and environmental sciences. Africa will be one focal area in this regard. The degree program will be developed together with the University of Cape Town, which holds a highly recognized position in this field, in the hopes that the program will attain an international presence.
Future students pursuing an Urban and Landscape Studies degree will receive training in scientific research and practical work in various fields of urban and territorial planning such as urban development, transportation and mobility. The idea behind the degree program is to utilize the innovative potential of these skills in the current teaching and research conducted at the University of Basel. The university focal areas of Image Sciences, European and Global Studies as well as Energy and Sustainability will thus be interconnected and expanded.
Three professors, one new institute
As part of the concept, the University Council approved three professorships. They have now been announced: one professor each in the fields of Urban Anthropology (with a thematic focus on Africa), Urban-Rural Transformations, and History and Theory of Architecture and Urbanism. Along with the creation of the new degree program, there are plans to found a new institute in the hopes of acquiring third party funding for the professorships needed for its development. As part of the 2014 University of Basel strategy, the development of competences in the fine arts and the environmental sciences lying at the point of intersection between humans and the spaces they occupy were announced.
In addition, the University Council approvingly acknowledged the concept for further strengthening the cooperation with the University of Cape Town.
