Maude Barlow as a guest at ISOE Insti-tute for Social-Ecological Research18.09.2014 - (idw) ISOE - Institut für sozial-ökologische Forschung
Maude Barlow, winner of the Alternative Nobel Prize, author, and water activist from Canada, will be introducing her new book Blue Future: Protecting Water for People and the Planet Forever at the ISOE - Institute for Social-Ecological Research in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
Water shapes the Earth: the land and the soil, the climate, the people, biodiversity and energy. And the supply of water is limited. So this resource needs to be used and managed sustainably, especially in countries where water is scarce. In these countries, basic needs of the population such as drinking water and sanitation facilities are not all being met. But even in countries like Germany where water is plentiful, it is becoming increasingly difficult to ensure that people will continue to have access to clean drinking water at the customary high-quality level. Climate change and demographic shifts are responsible for this, but also changing institutional frameworks like the transatlantic free trade agreement which is currently being debated.
This situation is the point of reference of the recently published book Blue Future by the internationally known author Maude Barlow. In her book, she outlines solutions and, with the help of many specific examples, explains why water cannot be allowed to become a commodity like every other one being traded on the open markets. Let us make water the center of our lives, is her creed. In her equally passionate and informative book, Maude Barlow explains why how we treat the blue gold is vital for everyone. She points the way forward to a just and sustainable economy which is the only way of preventing wars about the last water reserves.
This topic will be discussed on September 22nd by:
